The Gallery
of Photography, Dublin, Ireland, is delighted to announce that the prestigious
European Publishers' Award for Photography 2001 has been won by Dublin-based
artist, David Farrell. The award is perhaps the most significant international
recognition to date of work by any Irish photographer, and it considerably
raises the profile of Irish photography on the world stage. David Farrell won the award for Innocent Landscapes, a series of photographs made at the 'sites of the disappeared'. These are the burial places of eight people who were 'disappeared' by the IRA in the 1970s and early 1980s. Innocent
Landscapes will be published simultaneously in five European countries.
The book will be formally released at the opening of the accompanying
touring exhibition in the Gallery of Photography on October 10th 2001. The European Publishers' Award for Photography is a unique collaboration between five publishers: Dewi Lewis Publishing (UK); Actes Sud (France), Lunweg Editores (Spain), Peliti Assocaiti (Italy) and this year's host publisher, Edition Braus (Germany). Open to entrants worldwide, its aim is to encourage the publication of original contemporary photographic work.
